Production & Manufacturing 101

Location: Sherwood Recreation Center, 10th St & G St. NE

Production and Manufacturing 101

This 3- hour seminar will teach students about production and manufacturing for the fashion industry.  Students will learn about costing, sourcing, and manufacturing domestically and overseas and have the opportunity to ask questions. Specific topics include:

·      The difference between production and manufacturing

·      Creating cost sheets and estimating production costs

·      Making sure retail selling price will cover production costs

·      Finding suppliers for materials (fabric, leather, trim, notions, labels), and fashion production contractors (patternmakers, sample makers, etc)

·      Finding and building relationships with factories, manufactures and suppliers

·      How the retail buying process fits into the production and manufacturing picture

·      Production life cycle and delivery lead times

·      How to produce small quantity and large quantity runs

·      Domestic and International production

·      International considerations including finding factories, shipping and freight, US Customs and Border protection requirements

·      Paying for production

By the end of the workshop, participants will be thoroughly educated on the production and manufacturing process, will have resources to reference, and will know how and where to get help with their production needs. This workshop is suitable for both emerging and existing fashion entrepreneurs and is limited to no more than 35 participants.

About the Facilitator:

Melissa de la Santa is the Product Line Manager for Women’s Graphics at Under Armour.  She is responsible for creating the global assortment, delivering best in class graphics and driving growth through innovation and intimate knowledge of her consumer.  Melissa started her career at Under Armour in February 2008 as a Sales Planner for Dicks Sporting Goods.  Prior to joining UA, Melissa worked for 9½ years at The Sports Zone where she was a senior apparel/accessories buyer and private label designer.  She has extensive experience in product creation and retail math from her background as a sales planner, buyer and product line manager.  Melissa graduated from University of Maryland College Park, where she earned her bachelor’s as a double major in Criminal Justice Criminology and Family Studies.  In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her son, painting, watching sports and volunteering her time to programs such as Francis Scott Key Middle School’s Mentoring Program and Habitat for Humanity.

Technical Workshop Policy:

Payment:  All participants must pre-register and pre pay for the class, no exceptions.  In order to receive the GWFCC member price, all members must be current on their dues and must present their membership number at the time of registration.  All information will be verified. Non-current members and nonmembers will pay the regular course fee. 

Missed Sessions: Students are advised not to miss any scheduled sessions as there is a “no make-up class policy”. 

Arrival: Students are advised to arrive prior to the start of each session so that they may set up their learning stations. 

Refunds:  The workshop will be fully refundable up to 10 days before the first session. Cancellations prior to the day before the workshop starts are entitled to a 50% refund.  There are absolutely no refunds on or after the first class session.  DCFF reserves the right to cancel and/or reschedule the class of minimum numbers are not met. DCFF will either issue full refunds or apply fees paid to the next scheduled class.

GWFCC’s DC Fashion Foundation, with support from H Street MainStreet, Inc presents:

Fashionably Business on H-Street and the Fashionably Business- Business Plan Competition, Washington, DCs first workshop series and business plan competition dedicated to strengthening and supporting Fashion Businesses in The District.

Fashionably Business on H-Street is back for their 2nd year of a dynamic program that aims to provide multiple levels of support for existing and emerging fashion businesses.  From June through October 2011, fashion entrepreneurs will have access to a variety of FREE workshops, business checkups and one-on-one technical assistance to help grow, nurture and strengthen their businesses.

The program ends with the “Fashionably Business” Business Plan Competition, where 1st, 2nd and 3rd place contestants are able to win cash prizes and more.  Details about the competition will be available in August at www.gwfcc.org.

The Washington, DC Fashion Foundation (DCFF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit  organization created by GWFCC in June 2009 to support the Washington, DC fashion community through educational programs, workforce training initiatives, and networking and mentoring opportunities for aspiring fashion professionals and entrepreneurs. It works closely with GWFCC to undertake the following goals:

-Increase the business skills and workforce preparedness of fashion entrepreneurs;

-Improve the quality and availability of fashion design education opportunities for youth and adults in the Washington, DC area;

-Strengthen the connections and networks that form the foundation of the District’s fashion community.
