Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM (CDT)
Baton Rouge, United States
Techniques for Effective Listening
Speaker: Dr. Graham Bodie, Ph.D.
"To listen is to try to hear, to hear is simply to perceive with the ear."
We all know there is a difference between listening and hearing. Listening requires conscious effort and concentration so that your brain can process the meaning of words. However, many of us don't always practice good listening skills; we merely hear what the other person is trying to communicate to us, rather than actually understanding and comprehending it the way that they intended. This is why most people are "hard of listening" rather than "hard of hearing". How many times have you taken a directive from someone to later learn that you misunderstood their needs, requiring you to start all over again in order to complete the task successfully?
Dr. Graham Bodie, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at LSU, will discuss techniques to help us become better listeners. Bodie's recent accomplishments include being named 2011 Researcher of the Year by the International Listening Association, and receiving the 2010 LSU Rainmakers Emerging Scholars Award. Research interests include listening and information processing, with specific areas of interest in the component processes of active-empathetic listening, listening as supportive communication, individual differences in listening styles and concepts, and measurement validation.
