#TruGeneva - The Recruiting Unconference
Friday, May 4, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (CEST)
The global TRU Events are finally coming to Switzerland with #TruGeneva on 4th May 2012.
In Switzerland social media for Recruiting and HR is still very new, but clearly becoming an important topic.
#TruGeneva is the ideal platform for professionals from the people space who want to share their experiences, ideas and questions with others.
Previous TRU events (TRU = The Recruiting Unconference) have proven again and again: whether you’re already actively using social media or not, your input is welcome and will be a valuable contribution to the conversations.
Now is the best time to get started and learn about the many possibilities (and challenges) of using social media for HR and Recruitment.
What Is A Recruiting Unconference?
TRU events where founded in November 2009 by Bill Boorman (UK) and Geoff Webb (Canada) and have since taken place more than 25 times on 4 continents.
Recruiting Unconferences are based on the unconference or BarCamp principle, this means that everybody can be an active participant instead of listening to speakers and watching presentations all day.
The emphasis is on communication and the free exchange of ideas and experiences where the participants fuel the conversations, all spiced up and (dis)organized by Bill Boorman.
TRU events have proven to be a great way to learn a lot in a very short time, but also to meet new people and network.
Who Should Attend?
Participants come from the people space, usually from the fields of Recruiting (both corporate and third-party recruiters), Corporate HR, Talent Acquisition, Branding, Social Media, Technology Developers and Vendors.
How Does It Work?
The format of a TRU Event is to run 3 tracks (discussions) per hour. Each topic is hosted by a track leader who will start the conversation and give input where needed but will then mostly participate and let it happen.
Participants are encouraged to move between tracks as they wish and it’s not considered rude.
This is because the event is focused 100% on your learning and networking and the goal is for you to get real benefit for your business.
1. No Presentations
2. No PowerPoint
3. No Pitching
4. No Name Tags
5. No Dress Code
No presentations because the best knowledge is in the room by bringing together participants from all kinds of backgrounds with a shared interest.
No PowerPoint because we want the eyes to meet in the middle and everyone to have the floor.
No pitching because people will buy from you if they respect what you say, not what you pitch.
No name badges because we believe that if you don’t know who someone is you should simply introduce yourself.
No dress code because we want you to feel comfortable and focus on the conversations.
Anyone attending can suggest and lead tracks. Please share with us what topics you’re passionate about and let us know if you would like to lead a track yourself.
Some of the tracks at previous TRU events were:
- Blogging for your Business
- Employer Branding and EVP
- Graduate Employer Brand
- Is Social Media changing the Face of Recruitment?
- LinkedIn: Personal and Professional
- Mobile Recruiting
- Recruiting with Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Recruitment Case Studies - 120 staff, 4 weeks, no budget and other stories
- Social Media Policies vs. Our Employees Are Adults
- Sourcing: Finding Candidates on the Internet
- The Candidate Experience
- The Future of Job Boards

When & Where
BillBoorman is the co-founder and (dis)organizer of the TRU events.
With 30 years of experience in the field of recruiting, he has also become one of the most influential people in online recruitment.
At the end of 2008 his LinkedIn network consisted of 50 connections, mostly ex-colleagues: „Then I I decided to get social.“
Today his LinkedIn network is much bigger and he has over 10'000 followers on Twitter.
Bill is a serial conversationalist and as he says: „I have views to share and enjoy nothing more than talking, listening and learning on and off line.“
His professional activities include: running TRU events all over the world, training recruiters, speaking at conferences and of course helping companies like Hard Rock Cafe, Oracle, BBC and EA implement social recruiting strategies.
Finally, Bill is not opposed to having some fun:
When opening a new bank account, he insisted that the name of his company was „@BillBoorman“ (his Twitter handle). Although the bank’s software had trouble with the „@“, they found a way to make it work.
And at a TRU event in 2010 somebody spilt coffee on his t-shirt and around 70 people retweeted pictures of it. Bill now changes his t-shirt at least half a dozen times at TRU events.
Bill Boorman writes on his blog called The Recruiting Unblog.
