ASTD-Puget Sound October Chapter Meeting

Measuring Training Effectiveness:

Is it your Yardstick, or Your Ruler?

CEO’s, CFO’s, and COO’s think about the world in terms of Return on Investment. Many training organization have to justify their existence, to receive adequate funding, or to take on a new challenge.  Yet evaluating the ROI for a particular solution can be extremely challenging.  John Hanson and Greg Brisendine will be discussing the myth and the reality of measuring the effectiveness of training.  This interactive session will analyze differing perspectives on how effectiveness can be measured, the purposes those measurements are put to, and some strategies you can use to impact the “justification” process.

About the Presenters

John Hanson is a Seattle area native, a graduate of the University of Washington, and has spent the last twenty-four years in all aspects of training and development.  He moved out of a 22 year career in the insurance industry to join the high-tech world of Microsoft eight years ago, where he manages a high potential development program.  Over the span of his training and development career, he’s managed everything from basic new employee job training to teaching highly technical analysis tools, interpersonal skills, and doing expatriate training around cultural differences.  John is passionate about finding and teaching increasingly useful ways to be effective and productive on the job

Greg Brisendine is responsible for the development and implementation of Intrepid Learning Solutions’ Measurement & Business Impact methodology, linking clients’ organizational objectives to learning solutions. Greg has worked in Quality Systems for 20 years in a variety of roles including Customer Services Quality for a wireless company, business process re-engineering consultant, ISO9000 certification consultant, Quality Management consultant for a restaurant chain, and a Quality Improvement Facilitator for a Florida public utility.

The purpose of the Chapter's Applied Research Council's is to advance the Workplace Learning and Performance (WLP) profession by providing high-quality learning programs for Chapter members on how to conduct effective WLP-related research. Applied research in the WLP field includes both "front-end" research, such as needs assessment and organizational diagnosis, and evaluation research of learning program outcomes. The front-end applied research leads to better learning and performance improvement outcomes, and the documentation and reporting of outcomes improves the credibility and visibility of the profession as well as promoting continuous learning.

In 2009 the focus will be on a series of learning programs to build member skills in evaluation research, with a particular emphasis on calculating Return-on-Investment (ROI).

The 2009 ARC Meetings usually start with registration at 7:30 AM, and the programs run from 7:45 AM to 8:45 AM. Dates & Locations are TBD.
