Do you have responsibility for historic scientific instruments? Would you like to develop your confidence in working with them?  Would you like to learn some basics on identifying historic scientific instruments and hear about others experience in caring for and managing such collections?

The course will be structured around discussion of the typical types of material found in historic scientific instrument collections in Scotland.  Speakers will focus in the main on the collections of National Museums Scotland and the University of St Andrews, to draw out examples which can benefit others.  Topics will include the history, and development of historic scientific instruments in Scotland, terminology, identification tips and information to support effective curation and care. There will also be opportunity for discussion on the use of such material in public programmes.

Participants can be from any type of collecting organisation with collections in this area. The course is, however, not aimed at staff with in-depth knowledge of the subject area. Priority will be given to staff members who can immediately implement the knowledge gained in their organisation.

Please visit www.nms.ac.uk/training for full course details

Who is this programme for?

Participants can be from any type of collecting organisation, however the course is aimed primarily at museum and gallery professionals in Scotland.
