Great learning experiences require a heaping helping of creativity

The Imaginative Trainers' Lab is a hands-on experience. After being introduced to some basic creative training tools, described below, you will work with a small group to redesign part of a lackluster training course and --viola! -- minutes later, have developed an exciting and engaging learning event for your participants – and you!

Presentations: Introduction to Creative Group Facilitation Methods:

  • Introduction to creativity and innovation factors and tools for learning design
  • Factors that affect group creativity
  • A creative group conversation method
  • A creative group workshop method

Lab Work:  Group Creativity Methods will be used to help the group discover and develop creativity and innovation factors and tools that can be applied to learning designs.

Upon completion of the lab, participants will be able to:

  • List the four phases of a creative group conversation method
  • List the five phases of a creative group workshop method
  • List creativity and innovation factors and tools that can  contribute to the effectiveness of learning design
  • Identify their own opportunities to apply these factors to their own learning designs
Last year's Lab was a huge hit with participants. Be sure you don't miss this year's edition!

The Lab's 2008 Guest Facilitator and Leader

Mike Katagiri has demonstrated the applied use of imagination and creativity throughout his entire career. Currently, Mike is a Program Manager for the Microsoft Real Estate & Facilities Group.  In this role he recently crafted a long-range vision and strategy for the Group's Knowledge and Learning program. Mike's plan is now in the design stage, which includes developing 20 on-demand training courses for both hard and soft skills, blended with on-the-job learning resources in a shared Microsoft OneNote System.

Prior to joining Microsoft, he was the guiding force behind the Center for Project Excellence, which aided clients in achieving both organizational innovation and high-performance. Over the years, Mike has developed and managed a number of high visibility projects. Of particular note is the Woodland Park Zoological Gardens national award-winning Tropical Rain Forest Exhibit, which is still giving enjoyment to thousands of Puget Sound residents and visitors and a great example of creativity in action.

The purpose of the Chapter's Applied Research Council's is to advance the Workplace Learning and Performance (WLP) profession by providing high-quality learning programs for Chapter members on how to conduct effective WLP-related research. Applied research in the WLP field includes both "front-end" research, such as needs assessment and organizational diagnosis, and evaluation research of learning program outcomes. The front-end applied research leads to better learning and performance improvement outcomes, and the documentation and reporting of outcomes improves the credibility and visibility of the profession as well as promoting continuous learning.

In 2009 the focus will be on a series of learning programs to build member skills in evaluation research, with a particular emphasis on calculating Return-on-Investment (ROI).

The 2009 ARC Meetings usually start with registration at 7:30 AM, and the programs run from 7:45 AM to 8:45 AM. Dates & Locations are TBD.
