INTEGRATED PROJECT DELIVERY

Through early collaboration and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, a more integrated, interactive, virtual approach to building design, construction and operation is emerging. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) proposes benefits to all major stakeholders in the construction process:

Designers: The integrated delivery process allows the designer to benefit from the early contribution of  constructors’ expertise during the design phase such as accurate budget estimates to inform design decisions and the preconstruction resolution of design related issues resulting in improved project quality and financial performance. The IPD process increases the level of effort during early design phases, resulting in reduced documentation time, and improved cost control and budget management.

Owners: Early and open sharing of project knowledge streamlines project communications and allows owners to effectively balance project options to meet their business enterprise goals. Integrated delivery strengthens the project team’s understanding of the owner’s desired outcomes, thus improving the team’s ability to control costs and manage the budget.

Constructors: The integrated delivery process allows constructors to contribute their expertise in construction techniques early in the design process resulting in improved project quality and financial performance during the construction phase. The constructor’s participation during the design phase provides the opportunity for strong pre-construction planning, more timely and informed understanding of the design, anticipating and resolving design related issues, visualizing construction sequence prior to construction start,

and improving cost control and budget management.

SPEAKER:

Markku Allison, AIA, Resource Architect.

In his position on the Strategy and Business Development team—and as an experienced, licensed  architect—he serves as an in-house content expert on issues of both current and future concern to architects and the profession. He staffs the Integrated Practice Discussion Group and staffed the Board’s Sustainability Discussion Group in 2007, Markku also serves on special project teams and task forces, utilizing practice knowledge to enhance organizational leadership on various initiatives from an architect’s perspective. In 2007, Markku played a leadership role in the creation of two major AIA resources: Integrated Project Delivery: A Guide (www.aia.org/ipdg) and the 50to50 (www.aia.org/fiftytofifty).

Markku came to the AIA from Grand Rapids with over 20 years of experience as a designer in professional practice, winning a range of design awards. In 2002, he was honored as Young Architect of the Year by AIA Michigan. Markku earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master’s of Architecture with a concentration in Design and Theory from the University of Michigan.
