Older Americans have been particularly hard hit by the current economic downturn, with their unemployment rate reaching the highest level in 30 years. Adding to the problem, many safety net program budgets have been cut severely. To serve more low-income older adults with fewer resources, government programs and private-sector organizations are collaborating, including the federal Senior Community Service Employment Program, area agencies on aging, the workforce development system, community action agencies, and postsecondary educational institutions.
This forum will examine how cross-system partnerships, policies, and practices can improve low-income older Americans’ employment, civic engagement, well-being, and self-sufficiency. Andrew Sum will present new data to set the stage for understanding the employment and self-sufficiency challenges faced by low-income older adults. Joe Angelelli, Holly Hudson, and Ilene Rosenthal will discuss examples of collaborative efforts to increase the employability and well-being of these older adults.
Discussants Ray Uhalde and Sara Rix will offer national perspectives on collaborative strategies serving older adults and will join moderator Demetra Nightingale and the panelists in an in-depth discussion with the audience at the event and those participating via the webcast.
