Event Details

Go behind the scenes in America’s premier concert hall. Members of the Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers unfold the history and traditions of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Learn about the orchestra’s musicians, conductors and supporters, as well as the remarkable hall itself.

Under the leadership of BSO founder and conductor Henry Lee Higginson, Symphony Hall was built by McKim Mead and opened to the public in 1900. The first auditorium designed with scientifically derived acoustical principles (by Harvard professor Wallace Clement Sabine),   Symphony Hall was declared a National Historic Landmark In 1999.

Plaster casts of Old World neoclassical statues representing mythological deities, an Aeolian-Skinner four-story organ, and convertible seating (changing from auditorium-style seating to round-table, café-style seating for the Pops season) await. Tours will include backstage access, private function rooms and an auditorium viewing.
