Registration & Networking (8:30 - 8:45 a.m.) Opening Session (8:45 - 10:00 a.m) "Why Media in Cleveland Doesn't Cover the Media in Cleveland" Panel discussion with: John Butte, TV-5 News Director Elizabeth McIntyre, Plain Dealer Metro Editor Mike Roberts, Press Club Hall of Famer Peter Kotz, Scene Magazine Editor Jimmy Malone, WMJI What obligation does the media have to cover itself? The Cleveland media does a deft job covering the news of the day. Whether it's breaking news, business, features, sports, culture or public services, print, radio and television outlets can be counted on to cover the issues -- with one exception. Cleveland media simply doesn't cover the Cleveland media. Unless it's salacious -- an anchor in the buff, or sensational -- a sports reporter arrested for DUI -- little of the behind-the-scenes workings of local media is known. It's nearly impossible to learn about the business of journalism. Is it professional courtesy or fear of retaliation? Session I (10:00 - 11:00 a.m.) Session I - Track 1 "Computer-Assisted Reporting" presented Tom Gaumer, Plain Dealer How do newspapers use computer-assisted reporting and what types of stories can you develop on your own by learning to use the programs you probably already have on your computer? Session I - Track 2 "Writing and Art of Conversation" presented by Thrity Umrigar, author and CWRU professor; Sarah Willis, author; and Dee Perry, WCPN Join Cleveland Heights novelists in conversation on how creative writing and journalism can feed each other. Specifically, do the techniques of character development -- so vital to fiction writers -- also inform the work of journalists? They will also describe writing in general. Session I - Track 3 "Ethics in the Post-Enron Era" presented by Davis Young, formerly of Edward Howard & Co. In a world of greed, sin, ratings, blogs, rigid deadlines and questionable taste, the ethics of communicators are scrutinized like never before. The pressure to get stuff done is relentless. Choices can be tough when values collide with money. Session II (11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Session II - Track 1 "How to Manager Your Editor and Career" presented by Regina Brett, Plain Dealer Bored with your beat? Editor making you edgy? Before you do anything drastic, try this: Turn the job you have into the job you want. The same goes for transforming your editor/supervisor. How? It all starts with managing yourself. Session II - Track 2 "Graphics and Reporting" presented by Rick Steinhauser and Susan Kirkman, Akron Beacon Journal graphic designers How can the combination of graphics and content tell a story? How is effective graphic journalism used to provide useful information in an entertaining way? Session II - Track 3 "Events: Execution and Positioning" presented by Kathryn DeLong, Northern Ohio Live and Margy Judd, Executive Arrangements Luncheon Keynote (12:00 - 1:30 p.m.) Speaker: Evan Wright Roling Stone Magazine contributing editor and author of "Generation Kill" and 2004 National Magazine Award Winnter for reporting for "The Killer Elite." Closing Keynote (1:30 - 3:00 p.m.) "Interviews and Techniques -- Resistance is Futile" presented by Ted Gup, author and former Washington Post investigative reporter You got the interview no one else could get. Now what? Make the most of every interview by knowing what questions to ask, how to ask them and when to shut up and listen. Learn how to get people to tell you things that surprise even them. Discounts are available on multiple attendees from the same organization. Call the Press Club office for details (440.899-1222). www.pressclubcleveland.com
