Why a career fair exclusively for women? 

While, it is true that for the first time in history more women are graduating from college than men, women are still living more impoverished lives than men at every stage in life. 

According to the Center for American Progress, women are paid less than men, even when they have the same qualifications and work the same hours and women are segregated into low paying occupations, and occupations dominated by women are low paid. 

Consider also that women with low paying jobs, have children who live in poverty. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation Kids Count survey, children living in poverty has increased from 17% in 2000 to 20% in 2009. That’s right…one in every five children in the US is living in poverty! 

At the upper end of the scale, women bump up against the glass ceiling, as less than 3% of fortune 1000 companies employ women CEO’s. And, as for women who start their own businesses….while 29% of US businesses are owned by women, those businesses generate only 4% of the revenues. 

We can do better than this. Women are absolutely capable of competing with men for jobs on an equal footing…they have already proven that though their accomplishments in the world of academia…but now they have to be given the opportunity to prove that in the workforce.
