Description:

Specially selected guests are invited to share with the group, in a moderated interview type format, personal stories of learning, challenge and accomplishment in solving big problems. After a moderated interview process participants will then hear and learn from each other in a moderated discussion about solving community problems.

Speaker:

Brigadier General Joyce L. Stevens is the Commander of the Texas Army National Guard. She supervises the operations, training, readiness, and resource allocation for both state and federal missions. She serves as the principal advisor to the Adjutant General on all matters concerning the Texas Army National Guard.

Biography:
Brigadier General Stevens began her military service in April 1979, serving as an enlisted member in the Idaho National Guard. She was commissioned in 1981 through the Idaho Military Academy Officer Candidate Program in Boise. Her career has included various command and staff positions within the 49th Armored Division and the 71st Troop Command in Texas, to include Battalion Command of the 536th Forward Support Battalion; G4 for the 49th Armored Division (Rear Detachment); the 71st Troop Command G3; and as Brigade Commander of the 111th Area Support Group. In 2005-2006, she deployed to combat as a brigade level Task Force Commander in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Her unit was responsible for the management and security of Bagram Air Field and for the security and reconstruction of areas in Provinces across Afghanistan. She assumed duties as Deputy Commander, Texas Army National Guard in May of 2006, and in October of 2007 became the Deputy Commander, 36th Infantry Division (Light). On March 2009, General Stevens was appointed Assistant Adjutant General-Army.
