Curator Claudia Moore is please to announce the line-up for the 2nd edition of Old & Young & Reckless Together.

I’m honoured to feature the Youth section of David Earle’s masterwork, Maelstrom, staged and rehearsed by Danielle Baskerville with assistance by Kenny Pearl and danced by 12 talented emerging artists. Maelstrom is a piece about war and remembrance. The Youth section is the second in the piece - a high energy moment of joyful optimism experienced by the young people in a community, before war arrives and robs them of their innocence.  Says Pearl: Choosing this section from Maelstrom suited the youthful energy of the dancers and offered them big physical challenges. I also use this as a way to keep some of David’s work that is rarely, if ever, seen in Toronto, in the public eye and in the consciousness of the dancers.

For the first time in O & R history, Moore has commissioned a new work.  She chose up and coming young choreographer, Allison Cummings, to set a work on beloved teacher and dance icon, Pia Bouman.  Says Cummings, I chose to work with Pia firstly because of her standing in the community - she is a revered teacher and choreographer – such an important figure in the history of our community.  Secondly, she comes from a very different background – classical ballet and I am steeped in a more contemporary idiom.  The work has been great fun – it is very layered – very subtle – and we laugh a lot!” And from Bouman: It is an exciting process to be engaged in this modern vocabulary – I always want to “turn out” and she wants me to “turn in” – but despite our age and training differences we walk alongside each other very well.”

Rounding out the program is a duet by Marie-Josée Chartier and Valerie Calam and a solo created by veteran choreographer Karen Kaeja for young dance sensation Stephanie Tremblay Abubo.
