The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the State Library of Victoria have partnered to bring Victorian families the Young Readers Program.

Over the following 3 years, in collaboration with Maternal & Child Health and the Public Libraries, this project will deliver a picture book to every 2 year old in the State early literacy support materials for families with 4 month old babies including the It's Rhyme Time Booklet and DVD and Professional Development sessions in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne on Early Literacy Development.

The Professional Development sessions have been developed by Dr. Sue Hill, Associate Professor - Early Childhood Education at the University of South Australia, as part of the Little Big Book Club Training and Development Program. The training and the accompanying handbook are based on current research and
contain strategies for engaging diverse families and communities in the development in children's early literacy. Reference to Adult Literacy education and the role it plays in supporting family literacy will also be covered.

The Modules cover:

  • Child development - brainy babies, brain development in early years, talkative toddlers, phases of literacy development, the research.
  • Connecting with Communities - Homes and communities, accessing funds of knowledge in communities, technologies and new literacies
  • Reading and interacting - What is reading? What is important for beginning reading? What books work?
  • Successful reading strategies - tips for reading aloud, storytelling, successful ways of working with diverse communities.

We encourage you to invite other professional colleagues in the community
to attend with your staff.

This training is aimed at Maternal & Child Health nurses, Public Librarians, Child care workers and those concerned with early literacy development.
