Learning Digital Photography
• Level 3 - The Camera
-

Now that you've got an understanding of how you want to compose your images and how to get the proper exposure, you need to get more familiar with the camera and all of it's parts.

The first 3 hours are in the classroom, then we'll take a 3-hour excursion so you will have hands-on practice with what you've learned. Class size is significantly limited to assure personalized attention when we are out shooting.

What you'll learn in this class

In this seminar we'll talk about all those buttons, wheels, switches and dials on your camera and lenses.  Our goal here is to make sure you can take all your knowledge about Exposure and Composition and bring it together quickly to create the photos you're after.  We will also be talking about how to handle your camera correctly so you'll be able to capture those shots you want before they get away.  We'll also talk about keeping your camera safe from harm and functioning for a long time to come.

Here's some of the many topics we'll discuss:

  • Body - Where things are located and what they do.
  • Function Dial - What's on it and what it all means.
  • Shutter Speed and F/Stop Controls.
  • ISO Settings.
  • White Balance Settings.
  • Shutter Release, Cable Release and Self-Timer.
  • Hot Shoe and Flash connections.
  • Depth of Field Preview.
  • Auto-Focus Switch and focusing.
  • LCD Display.
  • Viewfinder.
  • Lens / Lenses.
  • Shutter functions.
  • Handling the Camera.
  • Using a Tripod.

Elk Falls Wind Energy ProjectThis is just an outline of the topics we'll discuss. We'll discuss how you can bring all the features of your camera together to create the photograph you really want and do it quickly and efficiently. You'll have the opportunity to get your questions answered in a way that will be meaningful.

We're going to talk about photographing your friends and family, your pets, your car, your house, nature, and just about anything that you might want to photograph. If you have a camera I encourage you to bring it along so you can get practice on your own camera as we move through these topics. If you have a tripod you should bring it too. There are times where you'll want to do shots where you'll need that stability.

This seminar will last about 6 hours with a 1-hour lunch break at noon. Please come prepared with a notepad as you may want to take notes on some our discussion. Be prepared to be outside for 3 hours (weather permitting) and bring water, shoes, etc. and dress appropriately.

Student Reviews:

I have taken every class from Jeff and been on a few excursions and have gone from taking hundreds of snapshots hoping for a few keepers, to taking a handful of photographs and most will be keepers. You will not find many people with as much experience in film development, digital, Photoshop, printing, scanning, business, teaching, studio, modeling, product photography, macro, and a tour guide through Kansas. Jeff can even make a drive through western Kansas a wonderful experience and you will come back with stories to pass on.  Mike B.

I have attended Jeff's photography class as well as a couple of workshops. I was a complete novice with my little point and shoot camera. Jeff insisted the camera didn't matter, it was all about trusting yourself to take it off "auto" and learn to really take pictures. The material was presented in a format easy for me to understand with lots of one on one instruction (and with a sense of humor!) He convinced me I was smarter than my camera, and the proof is in the photos. When people look at my photos and tell me I missed my calling and should have been a photographer... well that's a testimony to Jeff!  Lori K.
