Event Details

The Working Group developing a Governance Code for community, voluntary and charity organisations in Ireland is having a series of consultation events on the draft Governance Code.

One of the series of these engagement events will take place on:

Wednesday 18th May from 5.00pm - 8.00pm in Ballybane Enterprise Centre,Co. Galway

The CV sector organisations in the Working Group are: Boardmatch Ireland, Business in the Community Ireland, The Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups, Clann Credo, The Disability Federation of Ireland, ICTR, Volunteer Centres Ireland and The Wheel. Three organisations worked in association with the above as members of the Working Group: Arthur Cox, The Corporate Governance Association of Ireland (CGAI) and Sheila Cahill Consulting.

These events form part of a national public engagement on the draft Governance Code which will run until June 30th 2011. The consultation will be done through seminars, focus group survey, online questionnaire and stakeholder meetings across the country whilst a fully functional, publicly accessible and user-friendly website is being established to communicate the consultation process and the draft Governance Code and implementation guidelines. The feedback from the consultation phase will be reviewed over the summer with a view to publishing and launching a final version of the Governance Code in the Autumn.

The rationale behind the project is that our sector must maintain the trust and confidence on which our work is based, so it is vital that we not only practice, but demonstrate we are practicing best practice in governance. It is expected of us by our funders and the public – and it is what we expect of ourselves. Yet, no single good-governance benchmark for members of our boards or management committees to aspire to has existed for our sector. It was in this context that the organisations involved in this project came together in the spirit of collaboration and partnership to create a Governance Code for the sector by the sector.

As stakeholders in the community and voluntary sector with links to your own network and connections, The Working Group would like to make a three-fold “ask” of you:

1.      Come to an information and consultation event on one of the six dates planned around the country (or ask a colleague to attend in your place). They are timed specifically to attract both paid staff people as well as volunteer board membership – so please pass this on to you board or management committee so that they are aware of it;

2.     Use your organisational communications channels to ensure that all the organisations you come in contact with know about the new draft Governance Code, and participate in the consultation either through attending an event or making a submission;

3.     Consult with your own stakeholders with a view to making a submission before the closing date of June 30th.

On the launch date of May 16th, a user-friendly website with all the information on the Governance Code that has been developed by the Working Group will be launched.

The Working Group is anxious to ensure that as many people as possible know about these developments before the closing date for submissions of June 30th, so please circulate this email widely.

On behalf of the 11 organisations in the Working Group, we hope to see you at one of the events and/or hear from you online with a submission.
