This course is designed for software developers, Web designers and development managers who want to get familiar with both Java and Adobe Flex.  Basic knowledge of any programming languiage is required. 

The training facilities are located within 5 minutes walk from the Metropark train station,  an easy commute from Manhattan.


This five days training is delivered by Yakov Fain who authored several Java books, dozens of technical articles. SYS-CON Books released his latest co-authored book , "Rich Internet Applications with Adobe Flex and Java: Secrets of the Masters" in Spring 2007. Sun Microsystems has nominated and awarded Yakov with the title Java Champion. He leads the Princeton Java Users Group. Yakov teaches Java and Flex part time at New York University. He is an Adobe Certified Flex Instructor.

Day 1. Java basics

Eror processing - exceptions
Abstract classes and interfaces
Data collections: ArrayList, Vectors, Hashtables
Java streams - reading and writing files

Day 2. Java on the server side
J2EE components
Java Web appications with servlets
How to deploy Java servlets under Apache Tomcat
Using plain old Java objects with servlets
Basics of working with DBMS (MySQL Server) using ODBC
Creating a Web application using HTML, Java servlets and DBMS.

Day 3. Basics of developing UI with Adobe Flex

Understanding Rich Internet Applications
Getting Started with Flex Builder
Laying Out the User Interface (containers, layouts, view states)
Data Binding
View States
Handling Events

Day 4. Basics of developing UI with Adobe Flex

Comparing ActionScript and Java
Data structures
Working with XML
Retrieving XML Data with HTTPService

Displaying Data Using DataGrid
Using Remote XML Data with Controls using HTTPService and data binding
Creating Custom Components with MXML
Creating Loosely-Coupled Components Using Custom Events
Using DataGrids and Item Renderers,
Implementing Navigation (TabNavigator, View Stack)
Working with forms: Formatters and Validators

Day 5. Creating Rich Internet Applications using Flex and Java
Introduction to LiveCycle Data Services and BlazeDS
Flex remoting with Java
Using BlazéDS for building CRUD applications
Using Flex Message Service

Note: Students must bring their own laptops.
