From the President's Even More-Messy Desk
MoPictive Friends,
MoPictive Friends,
Since assuming the presidency just a few weeks ago, my desk is even more cluttered, now adding scads of post-its and other reminders of all the work that it takes a administer a user group.
We are back on our regular schedule this month, meeting Wednesday, March 16 at B&H. For April, owing to Passover closings at B&H, we will need to meet on Wednesday April 27.
It is just a few short weeks to NAB and pre-NAB press conferences and "visit my booth" emails from vendors dominates a great deal of my professional time. I'll share with you a few tidbits that we've been cleared to release as well as allowing time for group discussion. If last year was the "year of 3D" this year, I predict, will be the year of consolidating workflows as well as the differentiation of "video" from "digital cinema." In any event, I'm hoping for some lively discussion from our group.
As yet another word of apology to the group, I'm still learning the elaborate communications, registration and web updating procedures which Patrick spent so much time designing. I'm a video guy and a tech guy, not a web guy. I will figure it out at some point before my term ends.
And speaking of term limits, now is the time for our group to plan for leadership succession. I have no Qaddafi complex and am anxious to evolve on-going leadership. Talk to me-- or better yet, I'll be talking to you.
And a final reminder. Mopictive is a non-profit 501c(3) educational institution. We welcome (and really need) individual and company sponsorships. Even for "free" meetings, your donations are gratefully accepted and are recognized by the IRS as tax deductible contributions.
I'm looking forward to seeing both loyal attendees as well as lots of new faces on Wednesday, March 16.
Sincerely,
Ned Soltz
President, MoPictive

This month's lineup:
GenArts
GenArts produces some of the best VFX software around. There is hardly a TV show that hasn't used a Sapphire plug-in. Several years ago, Sapphire came down from its lofty perch in high-end finishing systems to versions for FCP/Motion and After Effects. This past year, GenArts acquired MonstersGT, an awesome set of plug-ins for After Effects which you're going to have to see to believe. GenArts is also a sponsor of Mopictive, providing valuable software to lucky raffle winners. We will hear from Todd Prives, GenArts demo-meister extraordinaire. And of course give away some software during raffle time.

Peter Olsen
After being selected as a regional finalist for a Student Academy Award for his first 16mm film Interstates, Peter was accepted into the graduate film program at NYU, where his work garnered several honors, including a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, a Warner Bros. Production Award, and a nomination for the American Society of Cinematographers Greg Toland Heritage Award. Peter was also awarded a $25,000 development grant from IFP/North and the Minnesota Independent Film Fund as co-writer of the feature film screenplay Ice Nine, now in development.
Peter taught a four-week workshop on documentary filmmaking at the distinguished International Film & Television Workshops in Rockport, Maine, and a six-week course in cinematography at the Kochi University of Technology in Japan. He has served as director of photography on dozens of films including documentaries, television series, shorts, national spots, and more than ten features. His work has been featured on networks which include PBS, ABC, A&E, ESPN, HGTV, Showtime, The Sundance Channel, STARZ, and in theatrical distribution.
Peter brings an invaluable distinction to the projects he shoots since he is also a writer, producer, and director. His debut feature, KAATERSKILL FALLS (co-directed with Josh Apter), on which he also served as director of photography, received the Critic’s Jury Prize for Best Feature at the IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival, and was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards. It aired 18 months on The Sundance Channel and was released by Wellspring Media on DVD and video. He is currently developing and shooting a number of projects, documentary and narrative, for screens large and small.
Peter will be discussing his current project The Singing Wilderness.
Another Mopictive opportunity to learn from an interact with a talented industry professional!
The Panasonic AF-100
With its Micro 4/3 sensor, wide choices in interchangeable lenses, AVCCAM codec, HD-SDI output and versatile mounting options, the AF-100 is a tough item for B&H and other vendors to keep in stock.
We'll get a look at the camera and discuss the applications for shooting on large sensor cameras relative to conventional video cameras.
This will be Mopictive's first look at the AF-100.

Pre-NAB Discussion
Mopictive's harried president and technology writer Ned Soltz will share his prognostications for NAB 2011. This is going to be open discussion about what we expect to see, would like to see, and where we feel the industry is headed. Next month we'll have a post NAB discussion to summarize what actually did happen!
Monthly Door Prize Raffle
