Event Details

Nonprofits have many different types of assets.  Most commonly we think of these as physical, such as buildings, equipment, vehicles and furniture.  But there are others that are equally if not more important: your core strengths, areas of expertise and institutional knowledge all represent opportunities to broaden the scope of your programs, generate new sources of revenue and better serve your mission.

This workshop will provide a framework for helping you identify your organizational assets, offer you new ideas and perspectives on how to leverage your organizational assets, and include an examination of social enterprise concepts and opportunities. We will explore case studies of how other nonprofits have approached this challenge, the mistakes they have made and the successes they have ultimately experienced. Topics will also include an examination of various social enterprise initiatives to help you determine if this is a path you may want to pursue as you reshape your agency's future.

Presenters: Peter Lee & Janet Cohen

Peter Lee has over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit arena and currently serves as an Interim Executive Director for community based organizations in the Bay Area.  His most recent assignments have been with the Marin Food Bank and Zen Hospice Project, which provides volunteer caregivers at the bedside of the dying at Laguna Honda Hopsital in San Francisco.

Peter's last permanent assignment was as President and CEO for Goodwill Industries of the REdwood Empire, which provides job training programs for peole with developmental disabilities.  It was in that setting that he learned the value of social enterprise initiatives that serve to fulfill the mission while providing potential new sources of revenue through earned income streams.

Janet S. Cohen has been a consultant and social enterprise practitioner working in and with nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years, focusing on earned income strategies and business venture development, start up, and management within nonprofit organizations.
