Understanding and Improving Workplace Dynamics for Nurses

Join communication and conflict specialist, Beth Boynton, RN, MS for this interactive & fun workshop. 6 Contact Hours

Assertive language, respectful listening and creating a safe environment are the keys to building healthcare organizations where collaboration can thrive. Positive workplaces, qualtiy healthcare and productive conflict can evolve when all three practices are standard operating procedures.

In this fun and interactive workshop we will practice speaking up and listening under tough clinical scenarios as well as explore the differences between constructive, passive-defensive and passive-aggressive cultures and their impact on quality issues. We will examine the challenges faced in flattening hierarchies, and address the skills needed to support these changes.

Objectives

Increase awareness of importance of effective communication skills in optimizing healthcare quality and workplace environments.

Practice assertiveness and respectful listening using conflict scenarios common in nurse practice settings.

Increase knowledge of various types of organizational cultures and discuss pros and cons relative to the administration, management and delivery of healthcare services.

About the instructor: Beth Boynton is a nurse consultant specializing in training, coaching and consulting re: communication and conflict issues that impact nurses and healthcare systems. She is an adjunct faculty member with New England College’s graduate program in Healthcare Administration. She writes and publishes Confident Voices for Nurses, a free newsletter which focuses on creating positive workplaces. She writes the column, Confident Voices for the ANA-ME journal where she addresses conflict and communication issues and is currently writing a book which focuses on helping nurses improve communication and workplace dynamics.
