Advanced Clinical Practice of the CVA Patient

Course Description:

In this one-day seminar, you will learn to create effective treatment gait/locomotion interventions that directly reduce functional limitations for any level of stroke patient, from acute care to community re-entry. Normal movement requirements will be reviewed, which will better equip you to efficiently and accurately identify the impairments that are causing dysfunction. Treatment interventions will be developed based on motor control and learning principles aimed at integrating cognition, motor ability and the environment for maximal carryover to functional task performance.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course the resident will be able to:

1. Perform a detailed observational gait analysis for persons with neurologic deficits
2. Classify individuals with stroke into one of 4 cluster-analysis groupings
3. Prioritize gait deviations and problems for targeted treatment of movement dysfunction
4. Be familiar with evidence-based treatment interventions for individuals with hemiparesis from stroke

About the Instructor:      

Walt Weiss, MPT, NCS

Mr. Weiss began his physical therapy career in 1989 as a graduate of the University of Southern California. He received his NCS in 1995 and 2005. He has worked at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center for the past 20 years as a master clinician, instructor, researcher, and mentor. Under the guidance of Dr. Jacquelin Perry, Mr. Weiss spent several years in the Pathokinesiology Laboratory where he coordinated two nationally funded research grants (NIDDR, NIH) studying rehabilitation, recovery and bracing for individuals with hemiparesis after stroke. Mr. Weiss is adjunct faculty at the University of Southern California, and is the Clinical Manager of the USC/Rancho Los Amigos Residency in Neurologic Physical Therapy. Mr. Weiss is nationally recognized as an expert in gait analysis and intervention. He has presented at CSM, the Annual Meeting for the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society, the Annual Conference for the CPTA, as well as several International Conferences. His work has been published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Gait and Posture, the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy and the Neurology Report. Mr. Weiss was the 2007 recipient of the Award for Clinical Excellence in Neurology by the APTA.
