Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 8:00 AM - Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 5:00 PM (PT)
This 16 hour course provides a great introduction to wilderness medicine for anyone spending time in the outdoors. Like the WFR, the course focuses on injury and illness prevention, patient assessment, long-term injury management, improvised splint and litter construction and environmental emergencies. Approximately half of the course is classroom lecture and half practical scenarios, usually outdoors. CPR class will be offered Saturday evening (additional cost of $10).
This class will begin at 8:00am on Saturday and wrap up at 5:00pm on Sunday. Camping in the Longmire Campground is available for course participants, as are breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Cost for the weekend is $50 for our volunteers, thanks in part to a generous grant from Boeing. Our instructors will be from Aerie Backcountry Medicine (aeriemed.com). This training has no prerequisites but is not appropriate for minors. Space is limited but other courses may be added if there is sufficient interest.
To hold your space in this course, please sign up online and send a check payable to "Aerie Backcountry Medicine" to Jill Baum - SCA, 55210 238th Ave. East, Ashford, WA 98304. We need to receive this check two weeks in advance (but the sooner the better). The cost is $50 for WFA or $60 for WFA + CPR.
All meals beginning with breakfast on Saturday through lunch on Sunday will be provided -- please send a note with your check if you have any food restrictions. Camping will be in the Longmire Campground behind the Community Building; you are welcome to join us Friday - Sunday nights. Please let us know if you'll be camping and when you expect to arrive. Our brand new shower facilities should be up and running by then, but please note that their use will be somewhat limited as we expect a very full campground.
Every year, hundreds of individuals contribute their enthusiasm and skills to help the National Park Service preserve and protect its natural and cultural resources, and to serve and educate its visitors. Volunteers help in almost every area of the park, from maintaining trails to leading guided hikes. The time commitment for volunteer work varies from one-day projects to full-time work extending over months or years. Both individuals and organized groups are welcome to volunteer, and opportunities are available both for highly skilled professionals and for families with little or no experience in land management. Consider joining our team! Your contribution of time and energy will help us to protect the magnificent natural and cultural areas entrusted to us, and you’ll go home with a sense of pride at having participated in something worthwhile. Mount Rainier is your national park!
