E-Learning Trends in Industry and Higher Edcation:
What you've wanted to know about E-Learning but hesitated to ask!

A Moderated Panel Discussion with:

Tom Kuhlmann, VP, Community, Articulate

Bill Corrigan, Project Manager, University of Washington, Emerging Technology group

Well beyond the latest training delivery fad; rapidly expanding e-learning technologies are all around us. What do these developments mean to our existing training initiatives? To the way we train our future workforce in universities and colleges? To our own professional careers and to our future personal development activities? What should we know about e-learning and how do we learn more? If you have wondered about these questions but are short on answers; or perhaps even wondering about the questions to ask, May’s STD-PS program is for you.

We are fortunate to have two highly qualified panel members who will address these and other questions about the emerging field of e-learning in a non techno-babble way. Both our panelists are experienced presenters who have helped many training and development professionals learn about this exciting field – what it is and what it is not; what it can do and what it may not be so good at doing!

Our format for this program session is designed to address commonly asked questions about current e-learning applications and to share our panelists’ thoughts about the future of e-learning in post secondary education and corporate applications. The panel will also address written audience questions either during the program or, if time is limited, via follow-up email responses. We expect this session to provide a shared learning experience for all participants. Come along and bring your questions about this exciting topic.

About the Presenters

Tom Kuhlmann is the host of The Rapid E-Learning Blog, where he provides practical tips and tricks for e-learning design. He's also VP, Community for Articulate, where he facilitates the user community for Articulate with a focus on building a passionate community of rapid e-learning developers.

Professionally, Tom has over 15 years experience in the learning and development industry and has developed hundreds of hours of training and e-learning courses for organizations such as Capital One, Washington Mutual, and Weyerhaeuser. He's passionate about learning and technology and excited about where the industry is going. He has a degree in Organizational Management and Masters in Educational Technology.

Bill Corrigan currently manages projects in Emerging Technology at the University of Washington and has directed the development and delivery of Extension certificate programs and courses via web technologies at UW. He is an Instructor in UW’s Extension E-learning Design and Development Certificate Program.

Bill’s career has focused on making the best use of technology for learning in higher education settings. This has required adaptation along the way to the constant changes in e- learning methods. He got his start putting engineering courses on cable TV at the University of Washington. Next up was developing a technical infrastructure for delivering nursing programs through a compressed video network at the University of Kansas Medical Center. At the Center for Advanced Technology in Education at the University of Oregon, he developed a hypertext literacy support program for hearing impaired children and created a model database-driven World Wide Web site for use in standards-based curricula.

The panel will be moderated by Gordon Storey, an ASTD-PS member, former HR Program Head in the School of Business, British Columbia Institute of Technology. He has most recently been concentrating his own professional development interests in the e-learning area. Gordon holds a Masters in Organizational Behavior from the University of British Columbia and is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP).

The purpose of the Chapter's Applied Research Council's is to advance the Workplace Learning and Performance (WLP) profession by providing high-quality learning programs for Chapter members on how to conduct effective WLP-related research. Applied research in the WLP field includes both "front-end" research, such as needs assessment and organizational diagnosis, and evaluation research of learning program outcomes. The front-end applied research leads to better learning and performance improvement outcomes, and the documentation and reporting of outcomes improves the credibility and visibility of the profession as well as promoting continuous learning.

In 2009 the focus will be on a series of learning programs to build member skills in evaluation research, with a particular emphasis on calculating Return-on-Investment (ROI).

The 2009 ARC Meetings usually start with registration at 7:30 AM, and the programs run from 7:45 AM to 8:45 AM. Dates & Locations are TBD.
