Beili Liu is a Chinese-American artist whose creative work has been exhibited and published extensively both nationally and internationally. She has held solo and group exhibitions, lectures, and presentations in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, California, Chicago, Bulgaria, Finland, and China. Most recently, she presented a large-scale installation, "Recall", in Fiskars, Finland. Liu's article of her permanent installation "The little house on the prairie" was published in the Ceramics Art and Perception magazine in Australia. Beili Liu has held artist fellowship at Art Farm, NE, Djerassi Foundation, CA, and Fiskars Artist Residency, Finland. Liu received her MFA from the University of Michigan, and is an assistant professor of art at Eastern Michigan University.
Hailing from China and residing in the United States, Liu finds inspiration for her work in the complex interaction between the two cultures which are a part of her life. The concept behind “Lure” is drawn from the myth of Red Thread in Chinese legend, in which lovers are connected by an invisible red thread from birth. As time passes they come closer and eventually find each other, regardless of the distance between them, or their social and cultural divides.
The exhibit features several installations, all inspired by the Red Thread legend. Lure #1, the highlight of the exhibition, contains small round disks made from tightly spiraled red thread, which are further connected and paired off as couples. Suspended a few inches from the ground, subtle air currents encourage the disks to sway and turn, and with a little effort, visitors can discover the "connected couples", though the swaying disks have their own "moves" and "affairs" regardless of the lines and connections beneath.
To celebrate the opening of “Lure”, the Chinese Culture Center is holding a reception at 6pm, May 9th, featuring modern and improv dance by Speaking Chinese, as well as an opportunity to meet the artist Beili Liu.
Premiering on May 22nd through May 24th at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Speaking Chinese is a new cross-cultural, multidisciplinary sonic dance theater based on the writings of Chinese American author Zhang Ailing (Eileen Chang). It will be a collaborative project of Director/Choreographer Kim Epifano with renowned Chinese composer Zhu Jian'er, Chinese ballerina Hou Honglan, American dancer/actor C. Derrick Jones, and producer Barry Plews of the Creative Futures cultural exchange program, among others. Speaking Chinese & Lure Dance are presented by Epiphany Productions Sonic Dance Theater, in conjunction with the San Francisco International Arts Festival.
Partial Funding provided by the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund and the San Francisco Foundation
