SEX, LOVE, & ROCK YOUR SOUL: WHAT MATTERS MOST

IN RELATIONSHIPS

Constance Avery-Clark, Ph.D., Jungian-oriented Psychologist

“There is a word that describes the attitude of respect for the Other, and it is awe….There is a

word for that experience of reverence for the otherness of the Other, and that word is love.” –

James Hollis

Sex and romance are often more powerful responses to our personal yearnings than their closest

cultural competitor, money. So often we long for that Magical Other only to confront a Radical

Other that upsets our conscious intentions and breaks our heart. This is because we do not

understand the fundamentally paradoxical nature of intimacy and the necessity of honoring

one’s own soul under the awe-ful influence of Eros. This workshop will explore the tension of

opposites endemic to sexuality and love, weaving together Jungian perspectives with those of

Masters and Johnson. Clinical examples will illustrate intimacy dynamics, and attention will be

given to both conceptual and practical issues in working with these concerns in one’s own life

and in the lives of one's clients.

Learning Objectives: Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Redefine intimacy as embracing the Radical Other, and understand what this embracing

entails for one’s own life and, in the case of clinicians, for clients’ lives;

2. Describe the contradictions inherent in sexual and intimate relationships; and

3. Demonstrate knowledge of specific approaches for creatively addressing sexual and

relationship distress including, for clinicians, specific treatment techniques to be used

with clients.

Constance Avery-Clark, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and an AASECT-

Certified Sex Therapist. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Jungian Studies Program
