An anonymous 14th century mystic tells us “We cannot think our way to God – because God can be loved, but not thought.”  In his masterpiece of spiritual writing, The Cloud of Unknowing, we are given a profound yet practical guide to the path of direct experience of the Divine, a path which the author invites us to explore with tenderness and love.  

Throughout the series of gentle letters which make up this book of secret teachings, the compassionate spiritual director Anonymous tells us that our thoughts and concepts must be released within a “cloud of forgetting” so that our love can rise towards God hidden in the “cloud of unknowing”.  Itself an outspring of ancient mystical technique and tradition, this contemplative work is the basis for the practice called centering prayer, and gives us both a beginning place and steady companionship for the journey.

Join David Wallace in a six week exploration of this ground-breaking mystical gem, read in modern translation and taught seminar style.  Together we will read and discuss The Cloud of Unknowing and other materials from this enigmatic tradition, and learn and practice as contemplatives – the path of the via negativa – trusting the entrance into darkness and silence, where illumination may or may not come, where the deepest teaching is possible.
