In 2004, an idea to bring together leadership from the faith and mental health communities was made a reality through the Bridges of understanding Conference. We welcome your attendance at the 4th Annual Bridges of Understanding Conference scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2008. Understanding your community, congregation and those in need, as well as, understanding mental illness and the stigma associated with it will be the focus of the Bridges of Understanding Conference. 

In the wake of violence encountered by faith communities this past year, we want to continue these efforts toeducate the general public about mental illness, focus on recovery, and encourage individuals experiencing mental health issues to seek treatment and support. You will learn during the conference how the barriers of stigma and fear keep individuals and families from asking for support from their community. Community support systems offered through congregations provide a positive experience to individuals in need whether they be individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, a congregation member with emotional concerns or families and their children or adolescents with serious emotional disturbance.

The vision of the Bridges of Understanding Conference is to build strong communities in which individuals with mental illness can live a meaningful life while striving to achieve his or her full potential through involvement in ongoing spiritual and social activities to facilitate spiritual growth and recovery.
