Overview | INLD Youth Program

NexusEQ Leadership Conference 2013

http://youth-nexuseq.eventbrite.com/

We are offering a special opportunity for high school students to attend the NexusEQ Leadership Conference (organized by Six Seconds and INLD) which will take place on June 24-25, 2013, at the Harvard Medical School Conference Center located at 77 Louis Pasteur Avenue in Boston, MA. The conference  theme is centered on “Using Emotional Intelligence To Spark Positive Change and the speakers consist of some of the most distinguished speakers in the field.

This exciting program for the youth will run concurrent to the main adult program and will feature tailored presentations and activities for the youth designed to equip them with the tools and skills of emotional and social intelligencewhich will help them to identify, understand, and appropriately use feelings and emotions in a variety of situations. These critical skills assist communication, self-direction, problem-solving, learning, creativity, conflict resolution and decision-making. The program will also include the following:

  • Negotiation and conflict resolution training for emerging leaders
  • Economic empowerment tools/strategies for career development and entrepreneurship
  • Managing difficult situations and people
  • Learning to creating a culture of collaboration

This youth event is geared towards exposing our youth not only to the Harvard academic environment so that they can aspire to achieve a great education for themselves but to also expose them to the same tools and techniques that academia and corporate America is using in emotional & social intelligence, negotiation, conflict resolution and leadership development. We are offering a limited number of such students the chance to attend the event for free including lunch and refreshments, as well as an opportunity to learn from high-level speakers throughout the event.  The students will have a representative from their high school or youth program as their chaperone at the event. Ideal students are those who want to learn more about the subject matter.

Speakers for the youth program will include: Dan Shapiro (Harvard Law School),  Irma Tyler-Wood (Harvard Law School),  Stacie Green (Harvard Ed School), Roxanne Daleo (Harvard Medical School), Sheila Nutt (Harvard Medical School),  Dr. Myles Munroe and others.

This initiative is part of a new blueprint for inspiring our youth in a new way. What if high school students got a chance to come to Harvard and engage in the educational activities of a premiere leadership program designed to empower future leaders and current executives, taught by the world’s most accomplished speakers, leaders and scholars? What if these speakers spoke directly to these students and poured into their lives while at this event? Imagine the impact that this would have on our youth especially those from a disadvantaged background. This is what our youth initiative is designed to achieve.

This opportunity is being organized by the Institute for Negotiation Leadership & Diplomacy (INLD) and Six Seconds.

Overview | Institute for Negotiation Leadership & Diplomacy (INLD)

The Institute for Negotiation Leadership and Diplomacy is a social enterprise/non-profit organization based in Boston whose mission is to advance negotiation theory and practice in the context of leadership, strategy and diplomacy, and that focuses on educational training services in negotiation, conflict resolution, and leadership development for urban youth, minorities and non-profit organizations.

Our core mission is to use negotiation theory and practice (in the context of conflict resolution, diplomacy, strategy and leadership development) to transform the lives of low-income students in high school.  We focus on using negotiations as a motivational tool not only to develop a desire for learning in general but also to equip these students with enhanced skills to help them become successful in their entrepreneurial or career endeavors.

Our strategy is based on collaboration where we seek to complement, rather than compete with, existing youth programs.  As such, with our short-term program agenda (usually one-to-two days  concurrent to a larger conference), our simple programs are designed to be an overlay or an adjunct to the curriculum or pedagogy that already exists with many established youth outreach programs in the region.

Our unique experiential learning program will increase students' self-confidence, teach them the value of negotiation skills, and motivate them to become entrepreneurs and leaders to solve the most pressing problems within their communities. We believe that there will be a transformative effect in teaching negotiations to students as we empower them with the tools to create economic dignity for themselves and for others.

In a time of economic instability, we believe that a focus on empowerment through negotiations will create a tipping point in the lives of a generation of teenagers who will be better equipped to access the opportunities that come their way or that they create for themselves. This is the heart of the Institute’s mission.
