1. What is True Freedom?

Is it defined by legal rights, or circumscribed by intolerance?  Is it the freedom of mind to pursue creativity or spiritual development?  Like a mini TED conference, this gathering of thought leaders will bring to life this perennial question about the meaning of freedom.

“If you dare declare that you are free, free you are this moment. If you say you are bound, bound you will remain.” - Swami Vivekananda

Freedom: The Song of the Soul ~ A Multimedia Presentation

Discover the fascinating and inspiring life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda in a captivating presentation, weaving together his words, photos and live music. From unknown penniless monk to sought-after speaker, the swami traversed the United States, overcoming entrenched racial and religious prejudice to bring the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta to the West.  He sparked a spiritual renaissance in America by introducing the Vedantic concept of a universal religion that transcends dogma and sects:

Swami Vivekananda“All religions, under whatever name they may be called, either Hindu, Buddhist, Mohammedan, or Christian, have the same God, and he who derides any one of these derides his own God."

You’ll understand why he inspired a generation with his eloquence, compelling personality and vivid presentation of ancient wisdom.

“The greatest religion is to be true to your own nature. Have faith in yourselves!” - Swami Vivekananda

Vedanta Society of Northern California

Founded in 1900 by Swami Vivekananda, the Society is dedicated to the principle that all religions lead to the same Truth—“Truth is one; sages call it by various names” (Rig Veda).

Vedanta teaches that the essence of all beings and all things is Spirit, infinite and eternal, unchanging and indivisible. It emphasizes that a person’s true nature is this divine Spirit, identical with the inmost being and reality of the universe and that the goal is to actualize this truth in one’s life.

The Society is spiritually affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order, which is considered to be one of the foremost spiritual institutions in India. The Society is guided by swamis (monks) of the Order, who serve as its ministers.  We offer a variety of programs to the public free of charge.
