The South Bay's own Young Musician's Performance Academy hosts its end of year funk and jazz concert on Sunday, June 2, 2013. Enjoy a night at the museum with performances by the YMPA Big Band, Advanced Jazz Ensemble, Elite Jazz Ensemble, Funk...and MONK'ESTRA!
What is MONKestra?! A BIG modern jazz band that celebrates Monk and other classic compostitions. They incorporate a contemporary twist with Afro-Cuban rhythmes, modern jazz playing, hip hop, traditional big band instrumentation, along with originals by Beasley.

“Monkestra is a 17 piece big band inspired by the music of Thelonius Monk. We play Monk’s original compositions as well as Duke Ellington, Benny Golson, and my own compositions as well. The sound and the feel of the music is very much inspired by the spirit of Thelonius Monk which is about experimentation, swing, feel, and modern/contemporary harmony.” - John Beasley
Opening for the evening will be the "Bill Elliott Song Treasury" - or B.E.S.T. B.E.S.T has been singing together for over 10 years and perform all over the greater Los Angeles area - for women's clubs, retirement communities, senior centers, church groups, etc. Their music is from the Swing Era, with mostly standards that the Big Bands played.

Young Musicians Performance Academy
Young Musicians Performance Academy (YMPA) brings diverse music into the lives of young musicians during a time when Arts Education is still being cut from curriculums around the nation. As a supplement to in-school music programs, YMPA provides a home for dedicated young musicians to expand their musical knowledge at a progressive pace. YMPA Jazz programs focus on complex, creative and highly communicative learning, teaching our youth not only to be great musicians, but to be culturally connected innovators, fearless thinkers and insightful, expressive communicators.
YMPA is dedicated to the idea that a successful young musician is created equally from working hard in a regular practice routine AND showing off that hard work! Since 2005, the YMPA’s groups have performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hard Rock Cafe-Chicago, Lighthouse, Sangria, Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, Jazz in the Meadows Festival, Coronado Jazzfest, Fullerton Jazzfest, and the Roxy Theatre, among many other venues!
