TALK DESCRIPTION:

HIV Prevention and Treatment for Sex Workers in Eastern Europe

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to grow in Eastern Europe, especially among key populations such as sex workers. This talk will focus on the vulnerabilities that sex workers in Eastern Europe face in regard to HIV risk and access to services. Results from fieldwork in Russia and Serbia will be presented.


SPEAKER:

Elizabeth King holds a Ph.D. in health behavior and health education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a MPH from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University, and a BA in Slavic languages and literatures and psychology from the University of Kansas. She was also a visiting scholar for two years in the Department of Sociology at St. Petersburg State University, Russia. Elizabeth conducted fieldwork in Russia under the auspices of a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Abroad Fellowship for her dissertation "HIV service utilization among female sex workers in St. Petersburg, Russia: Individual and contextual influences on access to testing and treatment". She has worked with Open Society Institute's Law and Health Initiative on the human rights aspects of HIV testing of pregnant women and Healthright International to evaluate HIV prevention programs for homeless youth in Russia and HIV testing in antenatal care facilities in Ukraine. Additionally, Elizabeth interned in the Department of Injuries and Violence Prevention at the World Health Organization in Geneva, where she co-wrote a report on addressing violence against women in HIV testing and counseling. During her CIRA postdoctoral fellowship, Elizabeth will continue her work to promote a human rights-based approach to HIV testing policies and conducting research on vulnerable populations' access to HIV prevention and treatment services in Russia, Ukraine, and Serbia.

Co-sponsored by the Yale School of Public Health, Division of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (EMD), the Yale AIDS Colloquium Series (YACS) is an interdisciplinary academic forum which brings together 50-60 faculty, researchers, pre/postdoctoral and international fellows and first year MPH students to discuss topics of HIV/AIDS-related research and policy.
