5:30 Chris Gomez, Allscripts Game Development with XNA
Chris Gomez, Allscripts

Have you ever thought about making video games but have decided that you're just a "line-of-business" developer? Does game development seem like a mystic black art? Nonsense! The XNA Framework is ready for you to use C# or Visual Basic to create fantastic games that you can publish today for Windows Phone, the PC, and the Xbox 360. You can leverage your existing .NET skills and make money on Microsoft device platforms as well as other publishing channels. But how do you get started? Come see how surprisingly easy it is to create your own games with XNA Game Studio. We'll start at File > New Project and use graphics, sound, music, and read input devices to create a complete game with no previous game development experience required!

Chris Gomez has been writing Windows software professionally for 19 years. His day jobs have included developing kiosks for theme parks and retail stores and building portfolio analytics for commercial lending. Today His hobby for game development started much earlier by making games using ASCII characters in text mode using BASICA. However, in his free time, you'll find Chris playing the latest games on his Xbox 360 or Windows Phone 7.

6:30 Break Meet your peers. Refreshments and drinks courtesy of Allscripts.

Space Cadet is a Windows 8 Metro Style App developed using HTML5 and JavaScript. The intent of this session is to help HTML5/JavaScript developers with writing their first Metro Style App in a fun, immersive way. The code for the game will be distributed during the session, and developers will be able to freely re-use the code in future apps. Space Cadet starts out as small game with a functional game loop. Functionality is added to the game, as each new topic is introduced, including:

  • HTML5 Canvas
  • HTML5 Audio
  • CSS3 Styling and Web Fonts
  • Implementing a Game Loop with JavaScript
  • Third Party Frameworks
  • Touch
  • Camera Access
  • Accelerometer
  • WinJS Controls

The session ends with HTML5/JavaScript developers having a baseline knowledge to build their own Windows 8 apps sell them in the new Windows Store.

Dave Isbitski is a Sr. Developer Evangelist with Microsoft covering Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox. He enjoys talking about technology and has taught full-day courses on numerous Microsoft topics as well as being a presenter at VSLive!, ReMix, FATC, CodeCamps and other community events.
