Event Details

Writing from the Senses

Saturday, April 28
10 am - 4 pm
Led by Laura Deutsch and Valorie Beer

Using all five senses when we write can bring us into the present moment, awaken awareness, and make our writing come alive. This workshop offers a preview of Laura’s upcoming book, Writing From the Senses, which will be published by Shambhala in 2013. We’ll provide delightful sensory prompts to help you tap into engaging material, enriching memory and story with imagery and detail. The workshop includes instruction and discussion, creative writing exercises, and short periods of meditation, both indoors and in the garden. We'll see how meditation, combined with sensory awareness, can help us go deeper in our writing. You'll never have to stare down at a blank page, computer screen or crumbs on the carpet again, when you use all your senses and the writing techniques presented in this workshop. For writers at all levels.

San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC)

Established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and his American students, San Francisco Zen Center is a Soto Zen Buddhist community with three practice places in the SF Bay Area: City Center, an urban temple in the heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, in Marin County, where fertile fields meet the ocean; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen training monastery in the West, in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. At San Francisco Zen Center, zazen, study, and work practice are available to a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks. All are welcome!
