The afternoon will start off with a Q&A with our panelists, Wesley Chu, Wesley and Brad Sun and Mark McClelland. The conversation will be moderated by Jeff Smith and we will be taking audience questions.

After the event we’d like to give everyone in attendance a chance to talk briefly about what it is they’re working on and some of the hardships they’ve faced. Then we’ll break into networking mode where folks can mingle with the each other and talk about everything from concept to execution. Even if you’re not working on anything, I’m sure this event is going to be a great, relaxed evening. So come on by if you get the chance!

Our Authors

The Lives of Tao follows Roen Tan, an out-of-shape loser, who finds his world turned inside out and upside down when a friendly alien hitches a ride inside his mind. Because this is no ordinary friendly alien: the entity in question is a secret agent, fighting an aeons-old war against the Genjix, a rival alien organisation hell-bent on destroying the Earth in their quest to return to their rightful place in the galaxy.

And poor old Roen really has his work cut out for him. He needs to develop a stiff jab, make the grade as a covert operative and find a way to save the planet, all while being hunted by the deadly agents of the Genjix

Chinatown blends together strong elements of magical realism, adds in some trippy psychological horror, and finishes off with memories from our own cultural experience. For the small, frightened community of Chinatown, a missing girl ushers in not only panic—but an onset of the truly strange and bizarre. In Chinatown, there’s just no telling what lies skulking in the dirty streets and back alleys.

His criminal past catching up with him, a troubled young man seeks escape into digital utopia by uploading his consciousness into a computer — just as first love casts his life in a new light. In this thrilling near-future science-fiction novel, Mark McClelland explores the immense potential of computer-based consciousness and the philosophical perils of simulated society.

To escape the hacker crimes of his youth, Raymond Quan has worked out a brilliant but extremely risky scheme. Taking advantage of his position on the University of Michigan’s Human Mind Upload Project, he plans to upload his consciousness into a computer, but make it look like it failed. It will appear to others that he died, and he can secretly whisk himself off to a remote computer and live out his life in a virtual world of his own creation, free from society and the far-reaching eye of the law.

In the midst of all this, he works up the courage to reach out to Anya, an attractive and outgoing scientist on the upload research team, and much to his surprise he discovers the attraction is mutual. He finds himself entering the first meaningful relationship of his life just as pressures force him to accelerate his already-dangerous upload plan or risk a long prison sentence. To make matters worse, the technology he intends to use has not yet been tested on humans — he would be the first person to make the jump to a pure-digital mind.

Chicago Nerd Social Club

We at the Chicago Nerd Social Club think a little bit differently.  We believe that nerds — by their very nature are social beings.  Think about it, all of the collaborative tools we use today were all developed by nerds.  This goes back to the days of the BBS — Nerds creating environments where they could meet new people, share ideas and socialize.  We’ve decided to take this social nature into the real world, in a non threatening and fun environment.
