Event Details

There are many workshops and classes available that focus on storytelling, for art or business. However, in the spirit of LA Makerspace, this class will take the class participants from theory to practice as quickly as possible. We won’t have time to let our brains get in the way of our hearts! Storytelling is about conveying to others something that is important, so we’ll try to get to the bottom of what is in our hearts and then help show how to visualize that emotion to others. As a bonus, we’ll delve into non-linear editing using iMovie for mobile devices. The latest version of the iMovie app for iPads and iPhones is a powerful tool that filmmakers could have only dreamed about a few years ago.

This will be a four hour class that will consist of the following:

1) An introduction to storytelling by lead instructor Leena Pendharkar. In addition to teaching, Leena is a talented writer and filmmaker. Her feature film debut, Raspberry Magic, will be released next month, and her web series So Natural, is on YouTube. She teaches filmmaking at Loyola Marymount U. and Otis College of Art. She has also taught kids at LACMA.

2) Instruction on the class assignment, “visualizing emotion using storytelling and the Tabletop Filmmaking Kit.” During the instruction, we’ll break down into several three to four person groups. Each group will have their own Tabletop Filmmaking kit including a stage, lights and characters. Students will be given a storyboard to help them lay out their story visually. Once the stories are ‘approved’, production on will begin using iPhone and iPad cameras.

3) The final phase of the class will involve assembling the productions on iMovie and projecting them for the whole class. We’ll have a discussion about the intentions of the filmmakers and how effective the films were for the audience.

Other instructors include:

Jeff Geoffray, a graduate of USC film school, experienced filmmaker with scores of feature films to his credit and the father of a son who is attending USC’s film school.

Tshaka Armstrong, a producer and editor for KTTV, Fox 11 News (aka Tech Ninja). Tshaka and his wife have their own non-profit that teaches digital literacy to families.

Ivan Cevallos, is a film and marketing executive who works with both traditional and new media. He is on the vanguard of transmedia and multicultural marketing.
