Contracts, Copyright, and Taxes

Learn the legal and financial basics of selling work and running an art business with Julie Herwitt, CPA, & Marci Rolnik, Legal Director, Lawyers for the Creative Arts.

Julie Herwitt, CPA, focuses on the tax and accounting needs of small businesses and individuals. She has a dual career as an accountant and a working artist and works with people in visual arts, music and theater, She an SAIC alumna (BFA Painting 2004).

Marci Rolnik, Legal Director, Lawyers for the Creative Arts, specializes in areas of copyright, rights acquisition and transfer, contracts, incorporation, and business planning for the literary, visual, and performing arts.

The Working Artist Program presents twice-monthly meetings and visits by working artists, as well as networking opportunities and other activities to support SAIC artists who are starting their careers.

SAIC's Careers + Coop Center assists students and alumni with preparation for careers in the arts. Our advisors can help with jobs and internships, resumes, cover letters, portfolios, developing professional networks, and more. 

The Chicago Artists’ Coalition (CAC) is Chicago’s cutting-edge artist service and advocacy organization. It provides professional development support to artists through its year-round “A.B.C.-Art.Business.Create” series, along with workspace residencies, exhibition opportunities, and programs educating the public about the value of art in our society.
