Wordpress Dev: Beyond Blogging w/ HTML, CSS, PHP, and Wordpress
Session I - Saturday January 26 from 11:00am - 3:00pm
Session II- Sunday, January 27 from 11:00am - 3:00pm
Chris Castiglione, Digital Product Developer

Wordpress is awesome, but often misunderstood. Is it a blogging platform? A CMS? Should you buy a custom theme or develop your own? vs.

In this course you’ll develop a custom site starting from scratch. Basically, you’ll take a static front-end HTML/CSS template and do all the necessary magic to have that site running live and dynamic using Wordpress.

Afterwards, your clients will be able to edit content themselves, manage the site’s navigation, and leverage an array of existing plug-ins that will help take the site from a simple blog to a fully functional CMS. All customizable; all on Wordpress.

Session I - [Getting Set-up and Theming] (1/26)

  • PHP basics you’ll need to know
  • The 5-Minute Install: Setting up a custom install of Wordpress on your server
  • Refactoring the theme files: header.php, footer.php, sidebar.php, etc
  • Setting up “The Loop”
  • Using best practices with template tags and Wordpress hooks: the_permalink(), the_author(), the_description(), body_class(), and many others
  • Setting up custom pages vs. posts

Session II - [More Theming, Navigation and Plug-ins] (1/27)

  • Sidebar.php
  • Getting widgets up and running
  • The menu and navigation
  • Writing custom functions with function.php
  • Configuring our plug-ins

Prerequisites:  You will be expected to have an beginner's level of experience with HTML & CSS (roughly 8+ hours of learning HTML/CSS, and at least one simple website). More specifically you should be comfortable using DIVs, IDs, classes, and a handful of CSS properties such as “background, color, margin, padding, float”.

Preparation: None.
