This ticket grants access to a tool training session which covers all the basic prerequisites of tool operation students need in order to build their chairs, and to a tool testing session to officially check students out on all the relevant tools so they can use them outside of class time. Attendance is required only if students are not already checked off at the Asylum on the operation of bandsaws, sanders, table saw, and the planer and jointer.

This ticket grants admission to all sessions of Woodworking: Build A Chair at Artisan's Asylum, as well as one month's Unlimited Membership to the Asylum to work on the project outside of class time; it also covers the full cost of materials for the student's chair.

Description:

Learn the fundamentals of woodworking! From roughcut hardwood you will plane, shape, mortise, tenon, and sand your way to the construction of a stable and long lasting chair. By the end of this class you will be able to comfortably and confidently operate the majority of the Artisan's Asylum woodworking tools and will have learned the fundamentals of woodworking design.

This is an involved process - students should expect to spend time working in their chair outside of class in order to finish in the time allotted.

Class Goals:

This class will be provide students with familiarity and skill in the use of professional woodworking tools and techniques. Students will also learn design concepts for woodworking and at the end of the class will have made a beautiful and functional hardwood chair.

Prerequisites:

Students who do not have bandsaw, sander, table saw, jointer, and planer experience are welcome to take the class, but must purchase the Pre-session: Tool Training & Testing ticket and attend the Tool Training and Testing sessions in addition to all four class sessions (see dates and times below).

Students who have already been signed off to use the bandsaws, sanders, table saw, jointer, and planer at the Asylum do not need to purchase this additional ticket.

Materials:

All the practice and final project materials are covered by the $100 materials fee included in the ticket price.

Instructor Biography:

Chris FitzhughA recent graduate of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Chris Fitzhugh has been constructing cabinetry, tea chests, lofts, and numerous other woodworking projects for the past decade in his family's VT woodshop. He brings his background in mechanical design and precision machining to the art of fine woodworking and is focused on providing students with the design understanding and practical skills needed to construct beautiful and functional items out of wood. Chris has previously taught "Building the Asylum" and is excited to be returning to teaching classes after a long hiatus. In his spare time Chris has co-founded a startup that is helping researchers push the boundaries of robotics research.

 Event Time:

*Students should expect to spend at least as much time working on their chairs outside of class as in it. Access to the Asylum to work on projects outside of class time is covered by the class fee.
