Event Details

Woodworking 101 is a four-week series class designed to teach the basics of woodworking. We will cover shop safety, stock prep, and tool use, focusing on the jointer, planer, and chop saw.

Students will use preselected reclaimed, old-growth lumber from the Rebuilding Exchange warehouse to build a tabletop. This project teaches one of the fundamental projects in woodworking: the glue-up. Your tabletop could also be a bench top, shelving, countertop, work surface, or any panel no larger than 10sf in total. Continue the fun with our Shop Time workshop. There are many RX accessories that you can purchase separately to incorporate into your tabletop.

No prior shop experience is necessary.

$180 instruction + $80 materials fee = $260

Woodworking Instructors

ALEX ENARSON

Alex Enarson is a Chicago-based furniture builder, Rebuilding Exchange employee, and owner of the company GRAVE TO CRADLE. When working in his home studio, he uses reclaimed, salvaged, and scavenged materials to build unique and functional pieces from his own designs. An amateur forester, Alex loves building with lumber made from urban wood. You can reach Alex Tuesday through Saturday at the Rebuilding Exchange or by emailing alex.enarson@rebuildingexchange.org. Alex instructs Woodworking 101 and Shop Time.

CASEY BURKITT

Casey is a product designer and builder. He began honing his skills as a small boy by assisting his father in the shop. Since then, he has worked as a home remodeler constructing and deconstructing houses, a book binder, and a product designer. He enjoys breathing new life into old, forgotten treasures by doing things such as adding a simple coat of paint or turning old-growth lumber into furniture full of history and character. Casey instructs Woodworking 101.

LEE BAEZ

Lee is passionate in his commitment to the creative reuse and repurposing of discarded material. His house is filled with found furniture and homemade solutions. Lee has found kinship with RX and its staff in their philosophy of trash and has been loving every minute of volunteering since he joined the ranks in 2012. Lee spends his days off assisting in RX workshops and occasionally helping with the production of RX Made products. Lee has a background in furniture making, construction, tool repair, and general shop work and finds special joy in making woodworking accessible to beginners. When not teaching, Lee spends time managing a photo mounting shop, filing his basement with instruments he can hardly play, and continuing his commitment to volunteering at Rebuilding Exchange. Lee instructs Woodworking 101.

SERGIO CASTRO

Sergio started at Rebuilding Exchange as a workshop volunteer and eventually became an instructor. His patience, winsome personality, and helpful nature puts his students at ease.  Sergio, who has a background in design and photo production, has experience building custom props and furniture from reclaimed items for major clients. Salvaging is in Sergio's blood, and he sits on the board for FINI, a not-for-profit organization that collects goods left over from post-production shoots. The items are donated and distributed to local charities. For kicks, Sergio thrashes on his guitar in his band.  He is also an avid cyclist and a sailor, and he can be seen constantly working on his house. Sergio instructs the Make It Take it workshops.
