Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The workshop for teachers will explore Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties, an exhibition that offers a focused look at painting, sculpture, prints, collages, and photography from a decade defined by social protest and American race relations. In observance of the fiftieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, this exhibition considers how sixty-six of the decade's artists, including African Americans and some of their white, Latino, Asian American, Native American, and Caribbean contemporaries, used wide-ranging aesthetic approaches to address the struggle for racial justice.

The workshop will include an overview of the exhibition and model a number of teaching activities related to NH and VT state curricula. A range of resources will be shared and participants will leave with all of the materials and information that they need to connect the exhibition with the curriculum.

Participation in this workshop is limited to twenty-five people. The cost of the workshop is $35 per person, and it is recommended for five contact hours toward recertification. Pre-registration is required by Monday, September 8.
