Event Details

In years past, South African wine was something you bought for house guests who wouldn't know the difference... oh, how times change. Last year, shipments of South African wine to the United States increased 11% to nearly a million cases, most of which were in the $15-20 range that many of today's consumers prefer. From Bordeaux-styled Cabernets with structure and finesse to mouthwatering Sauvignon Blancs, South Africa takes the familiar and makes it new. Despite over three centuries of winemaking tradition, the region remains a mystery to most of us as it struggles to share the spotlight with more familiar wine countries.

In our continued effort to demystify the lesser known wine regions of the world, we've invited Mat Dorment from M.S. Walker to pour five South African wines that show the diverse growing regions, stylistic influences, and imagination behind this country's winemaking. Mat travelled to South Africa last year to discover these wines on a new level and is our go-to expert on the subject. Our class will run about 45-60 minutes in a relaxed, informal environment as we taste through each wine, with time for questions and conversation after the presentation.

Your $20 materials fee includes:

Tastings of five South African wines
A reception wine and cheese & crackers to start the evening
A presentation and discussion with Mat Dorment from M.S. Walker
Discounts on tasting wines at Bauer Wine & Spirits after the class

About Bauer’s Educational Series
Bauer Wine & Spirits has always been committed to educating our customers. In 2014, we’ll offer a series of classes that give customers an opportunity to get an even deeper knowledge of what they’re drinking. Our classes are designed to be relaxed, informative, and affordable while taking the intimidation out of beverage education. We hope you learn something new, taste something new, and gain a better appreciation of what's in your glass.
