Event Details

Join us on the journey of Hamlet (...Unmasked).

Hamlet (...Unmasked) is a production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Staged in classic period form, this production explores the story through the eyes of the lead character by representing the other characters in mask. All of the characters except Hamlet wear commedia del arte-inspired masks, thus depicting Hamlet's perception of them. Meanwhile, Hamlet remains unmasked, so that the audience may identify closely with him.

Commedia del arte is an improvisational theatrical art form that was popular during much of the Middle Ages. Stories were told using a number of stock characters - Pantalone, the easily duped head of household; the Inamorata - the beautiful young girl; Captain Spovento - the brash, impulsive but very handsome young lover and troublemaker, etc.  Performers often wore masks so that the audience could identify these characters easily.

In Hamlet Unmasked, Hamlet sees the people of his universe as stock characters or as people with easily predictable qualities. These pre-assumed qualities color Hamlet's beliefs about their motives and actions, and influence his interactions with them. The masks also de-personalize and strip away the humanity of the characters, which may help with Hamlet's possible detachment from reality.

Hamlet (...Unmasked) runs July 24, 25 and 26 at 8PM at the John De Sotelle Studio Theater in the Times Square Arts Building - 300 West 43rd Street, 3rd Floor (corner of 8th Avenue and West 43rd Street).  The building has two elevators but they as slow so please plan extra time to get upstairs.
