Event Details

to honor

William Asadorian

William was trained as an archaeologist and historian at Queens College under Professor Leo Hershkowitz. His interest in local history led him to participate in many archaeological excavations, both in Lower Manhattan and in Northern Brooklyn, near the Navy Yard.

William has unearthed many treasures, including pottery, parts of ships and colonial-era cannons.  Unlike an antiquities dealer, William has donated many of his treasures to historical societies and universities. He has saved many historical relics, and was instrumental in the discovery and preservation of Arbitration Rock, a colonial marker that was used to end a centuries-long dispute, that finally fixed the Brooklyn-Queens boundary.

For the last thirty years, William served as archivist and librarian at the Long Island Collection and the Social Sciences Divisions of the Queens Borough Public Library's Main Branch at Jamaica.

He is also a published author and his two most popular books are Old Queens, N.Y. in Early Photographs (1991) and Old Rockaway, N.Y. in Early Photographs (2000), both published by Dover and co-authored with the late Vincent F. Seyfried.

William resides in Queens with Diana, his wife of many years.

The above biography was provide by historian Brian Merlis
