Learn from Former Founding Engineer at Mint, Founder of BizeeBee and Femgineer: Poornima Vijayashanker

Will It Launch?

There is a misconception that to be a startup you need to have a team that can build a full product. And only when the product is built can you attract customers and convince them to pay! But this approach takes a lot of time, and an abundance of resources that are unavailable to most entrepreneurs.

In this workshop, Poornima will share strategies for brainstorming, validating your idea, launching it, and even attracting early adopters who are willing to pay, as a scrappy startup.

Poornima will also guide you through a series of hands-on exercises. You'll leave learning what you need to focus on to bring your idea to market, how to reach out to early adopters, understand what they're willing to pay for, and build your initial prototype with or without a team.

Poornima's Bio:

Poornima Growing up in the age of the personal computer revolution, Poornima Vijayashanker was always fascinated by technology. She taught herself to type at 10 on her mother’s typewriter, and then took apart her first computer at 14. Her father was a hardware engineer. When he said he made “chips” she thought potato chips, and when he said wafers, she thought cookies! Eventually her dad took her to his fab when she was 9, she sat and watched how chips and wafers were made and tested. Not disappointed at the lack of treats, she was utterly amazed by how everything was mechanized! Inspired by all that technology could do for humanity, she double majored in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Duke University. After graduating she moved out West to be in the heart of tech, Silicon Valley.

She began her career as an R&D Engineer at Synopsys, eventually becoming enamored by Silicon Valley’s startup scene. Her first experience was as a founding engineer at Mint.com.

During her time at Mint, Poornima began blogging on engineering and entrepreneurship. Her goals at the time were modest: to have a creative outlet and showcase that women can be sophisticated, cultured, and still be engineers, Femgineers!

After Mint was acquired by Intuit, Poornima decided it was time to go from being a founding engineer to a founder! She started BizeeBee, out of a passion for yoga, which grew out of a 6 year practice. BizeeBee helps fitness businesses with customer management, and currently services private instructors and studios around the country.

Years ago when entering into tech, Poornima thought nothing of it being a male-dominated field. However, she took notice of how it impacted the rate of innovation on teams, success in recruiting and retaining technical talent, and ultimately building companies.

She has since taken her 6 year old blog, Femgineer, and transformed it into an education tech startup focused on helping professionals in tech level up in their careers, and tech entrepreneurs build products and companies.

Most recently, Poornima has been invited to teach as a visiting professor at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering. In the Fall of 2013 she will be teaching a course on: How to Start New Ventures in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Aside from being an engineer, entrepreneur, mentor, and blogger Poornima is an avid traveler, foodie, and Bikram yogini. She currently resides in Palo Alto, CA.
