WHO GIEESC Meeting Content

The 5th WHO GIEESC Meeting will address the following:

  • Overview of WHO GIEESC activities and goals www.who.int/surgery
  • Review progress of country activities for implementation of the WHO Integrated Management for Emergency & Essential Surgical Care tools for capacity building   http://hinfo.humaninfo.ro/websites/imeesc/index.html.
  • Updates from the GIEESC working groups:
    • Organizational Planning
    • Finance and Resource Mobilization
    • Education and Training
    • Burden of Surgical Disease

    • Anaesthesia and Health System Strengthening
    • Technology and Technology Transfer
  •  Strategic collaborations and partnerships for research, capacity building, and advocacy for the role of Emergency and Essential Surgical Care towards strengthening health systems and contributing to universal health coverage
  • Developing recommendations and action plan for 2014-2015 

About the WHO GIEESC 

The WHO Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) was established in December, 2005. This global forum convenes multidisciplinary stakeholders representing health authorities, academia, health professionals, health economists, leaders of health education and training programs, NGOs, civil and professional societies, local and international organizations. GIEESC includes more than 1000 members from 100 countries who are involved in reducing death and disability from injuries, pregnancy related complications, disasters, and other surgical conditions in low-and middle-income countries.

WHO GIEESC Experts                                                                                                           Existing WHO GIEESC Members (also referred to as WHO GIEESC Experts) are kindly asked to indicate their membership status when registering for the WHO GIEESC Meeting online.  Professionals engaged in global surgical care issues who are not registered as WHO GIEESC Experts are invited to apply for membership here.  

WHO GIEESC Meeting Observers                                                                                     Students, trainees and members of the public are also invited to join the meeting as observers.  As space is limited, interested WHO GIEESC Meeting Observers must register on-line to reserve their spot.  All meeting observers will be asked to present a copy of their registration ticket for admission to the WHO GIEESC Meeting.

The WCSOTA will be beneficial to all experts working or interested in the field of global surgical care, including: surgeons and physicians from multiple disciplines and specialties; obstetricians and gynecologists; traumatologists; anesthetists; nurses; health administrators and policy-makers; WHO, UN and MOH representatives; public health practitioners, academics and researchers.

Call for Abstracts

We invite you to submit an abstract to be considered for oral or poster presentation at the WCSOTA. This year's meeting will focus on addressing global surgical care challenges within the context of accessibility, sustainability and evidence-based practice, encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing across disciplines. Abstract deadline is August 1, 2013.

Abstracts will be accepted in the following general areas:

• General Surgery, Neurosurgery and Orthopedics
• OB/GYN and Urology
• Trauma
• Anesthesia and Critical Care
• Nursing and Midwifery
• Plastics, ENT, OMFS and Ophthalmology
• Cross-disciplinary Issues in Global Surgery

Continuing Education 

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the International College of Surgeons (ICS), the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIOG), and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This live activity has been designated for a maximum of 10.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Other Credits

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 10.75 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.
