Who is Emmett Till? Emmett Louis Till was born on July 25, 1941. His parents, Louis and Mamie Till, separated shortly after, leaving Mamie to be the sole parent in their home in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1955, Emmett and his cousin went to visit family in Mississippi. His mother made sure to instruct Emmett to “mind his manners” when around white people, as racism and prejudice was overt and prevalent particularly in Mississippi. According to several versions, Emmett whistled at a white woman and others say he grabbed her hand and asked for a date; others say all he did was say “Bye, baby” as he left the store. This play explores the impact of the untimely death of Emmett Till and the powerful ripples of change that transformed America but also introduces a young boy whose vibrant personality, and charismatic disposition always left a wrinkle in the forehead and smile on your face and that is what will be forever missed.
