What Happens When Design and Tech Innovators Team Up?

PARC and design and innovation consultancy Smart Design’s IxD Lab have developed a design vision for a wearable medical patch that illustrates how PARC’s printed electronics technologies could change product design and development. Together we explored a variety of applications of printed electronics across a number of industries (transportation, wearables, structural monitoring, and more) where this type of technology could make an impact. Ultimately, we settled on health and wellness for this project as a way to best illustrate the human/personalized interaction (and impact) between printed technology and the individual. Our collaborative vision has been realized through a series of renderings and high-level concepts for a wearable medical patch – which would be easy–to–wear, low cost, and possibly disposable – and is an example of what is possible when thinking about implementing printed electronics.

Join us at PARC Forum on May 5, 2014 with experts from both PARC and Smart Design for an in-depth discussion on how a commercial innovation center and a global design lab can ideate in order to take a disruptive technology to market.

Panelists:

Connie Guglielmo (moderator) is Editor-in-Chief of CNET News. She has extensive experience writing about and overseeing coverage of the world’s most-influential technology companies and their CEOs. Connie also previously wrote for Forbes and spent seven years as a financial reporter and enterprise editor for Bloomberg.

Janos Veres manages PARC’s Printed Electronics team. His current interests are in combining disruptive material, process, and device technologies – for printed, flexible circuits; sensor and memory arrays; batteries and display devices – all with a focus on early commercialization opportunities. Dr. Veres is an author on over 20 patents and 40 publications.

Mike Kuniavsky is a user experience designer, researcher, and author.  He works in PARC’s Innovation Services group.  As a twenty-year veteran of digital product development, Mike designs products, business processes, and services at the leading edge of technological change.

Dan Saffer has designed everything from websites to consumer electronics to robots. A Creative Director at Smart Design, Dan leads teams in creating new interaction paradigms across a wide range of products, spanning both digital and physical. He is the author of four books.
