Please join WHA in honoring Deborah Proctor, President and CEO of St. Joseph Health.

Deborah Proctor is the president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Health, based in Irvine, California. She leads one of the nation’s top Catholic health systems, which serves communities throughout California, Texas and New Mexico. St. Joseph Health is a $6 billion not-for-profit health system consisting of 16 hospitals, physician organizations, home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient services, skilled nursing facilities and community outreach services. St. Joseph Health also includes an affiliation with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in its Southern California region.

As the president and CEO, Proctor is ushering in a new direction to transform St. Joseph Health into a unified health delivery system. Her efforts are leading the health system clinicians, leadership and staff on a journey that ensures the regions we serve are among the Healthiest Communities; we continue to strive toward delivering Perfect Care to all of our patients; and that every interaction with patients, families and one another is a Sacred Encounter.

Proctor has dedicated her career to improving the health and wellness of the communities where she has lived and worked. She has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2011, Proctor was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare and by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the Top Women Hospital and Health Care Leaders to Know. In addition, Proctor currently serves as the Chair of the Catholic Health Association.

Her career in health care not only includes direct patient care, but also health care education and administration. After working as a critical care nurse and an associate professor, Proctor served in various leadership positions at St. Joseph Health in California, and at Voluntary Hospitals of America in Dallas, Texas. She worked in health care consulting with the Hay Group and before returning to St. Joseph Health in 2004 as President and CEO, Proctor was the Chief Administrative Officer of Ascension Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems.

Proctor was part of a team of authors collaborating on a Manual for Hospital Ethics Committees, published by the American Hospital Association. She has also authored several health care articles. In 1973, she received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of California, Los Angeles and in 1976 she received her master’s degree in nursing from California State University, Los Angeles.
