Be it building an entire startup or just a better app, certain skills are applicable to anyone looking to push their business forward. Join us for a weekend workshop focused on entrepreneurial thinking and best practices in UX design and development. This two-day workshop is filled with interactive lectures, case studies, and exercises which give participants real takeaways to real business problems.
Day 1: Entrepreneurial Thinking
Saturday's classes will focus on strengthening entrepreneurial skills and incorporating entrepreneurial thinking into every business decision, while taking an additional look at how to infuse your startup with social good - a highly desirable intangible that has come to define many successful startups and an important distinction in today's business climate.
Day 2: Best Practices in UX Design
Sunday's classes are all about design. Covering why user experience matters, lean UX strategy, usability, and theory, the goal is to provide participants with a range of understanding in the design process, from assessing customer needs, to creating wireframes and assets. These concepts not only help students to convey their ideas to designers, but also develop their ability to critique, and identify what works and what doesn't.
This weekend workshop will teach students:
- How to conduct a UX Gap Analysis
- How to make sure that application satifies the user's expectations
- How online success can be achieved by focusing on both disruptive design and customer acquisition techniques
- The importance of application polish
- Effective ways to scale your business
- How to develop entrepreneurial goals and learn how to stick with them
- How to incorporate social good aspects into your business
- Key design terminology and fundamental concepts such as typography, color theory, and balanced compositions
About the Instructors
Chris Becker is an Interaction Design / UX/IA Design / Design Researcher designer with a BFA in Painting from Colorado State University and a MFA from the Art Center College of Design: Media Design Program. By asking questions around, in, and through existing issues, Chris utilizes the skills of experimentation, prototyping, design, user testing and analysis to generate new understanding and insight into otherwise unexplored areas within design, culture, and business. Chris is a creative thinker with a multimedia background who is passionate about storytelling's ability to explore and engage the experience of a user. Clients include Toyota, VW, CB2, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, California Milk Ad Board, Mattel, Disney, WB, and EA, among others.
Michael Geer cut his teeth with Badoo over in Moscow and London. During his 5 years there he helped bring Badoo from less than an idea to a global 70 million member network. He left Badoo in July 2010 and is now a Techstars mentor, a Board Advisor to several startups, teaches popular SkillShare classes on user acquisition and leads a social good for-profit meetup in NYC. MG has recently started a new venture as Founder of CauseCart - focusing on allowing users to raise funds for their chosen cause without donating any of their own time or money (launching soon...). Todd Lefelt is Managing Director of User Experience at Huge in Los Angeles. Since joining Huge in 2006, Todd has been instrumental in building the agency's user experience team and helping to define the philosophy and process applied to user-centric design. In 2010, Todd joined Huge's Los Angeles office, where he has played a key role in the development of the company's West Coase presence. Todd has directed interactive design and research for some of Huge's largest engagements and has worked with clients including Clear Channel, National Geographic, NBC Universal, Samsung, Toyota and Warner Music Group. With nearly two decades of industry experience, Todd held senior positions at a number of other companies prior to joining Huge, including Time Inc. Interactive, Ecos Technologies, Pathways Flandrau Science Center, Wave Technologies, Kozmo.com, R/GA and Ultra 16. Todd received a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MA from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University.
Dan Maccarone is the co-founder of Charming Robot, a product design company based in NYC. For the past twelve years, he has been helping startups and media companies shape their online product strategy, including Foursquare, Rent the Runway, Jetsetter and Savored. His experience also includes television, music and print media, and he has worked with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Gawker, Saturday Night Live, Universal Music and The Wall Street Journal. One of his most noted projects was creating the original strategy and user experience for Hulu. Prior to Charming Robot, Dan co-founded the design agency Hard Candy Shell. Dan received his Master's Degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and his Bachelor of Arts from Colby College in English and Performing Arts.
Mike Margolin is the VP, Interactive Marketing Director at RPA, one of the largest independent, full-service agencies on the West Coast. RPA clients include Honda, Intuit, Farmers Insurance and MGM Resorts. He oversees several key areas of RPA digital marketing work, including analytics, search marketing, relationship marketing and programmatic buying. He works closely with agency clients to develop a unique digital marketing architecture for each brand's specific objectives, which may range from direct response to engagement and advocacy. Mike also teaches the course Advertising in the Digital Age, part of UCLA Extension's Marketing Certificate program.
Dan Murillo is the CEO and Founder of Little Black Bag (LBB), a social eCommerce startup based in Los Angeles. LBB launched in January and has raised over $10MM of venture capital funding from GRP Partners, DCM, and executives from Facebook and Pinterest. Prior to starting Little Black Bag, Dan was a venture capitalist at Greycroft Partners, a digital media focused venture fund with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Dan's past experience includes working as a Program Manager on the Microsoft Outlook team and investment banking with Morgan Stanley. Dan holds a BA, magna cum laude, in Computer Science from Amherst College, with additional coursework from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate College of Business.
Jaime Russell Levy (look her up on Wikipedia and LinkedIn) has been a pioneer for over 20 years in the creation of innovative browsing and non-linear storytelling experiences for products and services distributed on disk media, mobile devices, the Web and iTV. These days she runs a User Experience Strategy and Design practice in Los Angeles called JLR Interactive that caters to "lean" startups, helping them transform their business concepts into sustainable and scalable online solutions. Throughout her career, Jaime has been a part-time college professor. She taught at NYU ITP for seven years and is currently teaching User Experience Design at UCLA Extension during the Fall/Spring quarters.
