The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) course introduces attendees to Scrum values, principles, and practices and this agile-based empirical product development framework.  Successful completers become Certified ScrumMasters, a first step in the journey of learning Scrum and becoming proficient in its use.

Students will assume responsibility for their learning in the course and will work in small teams.  The course includes a detailed Scrum project simulation and other exercises that will reinforce course concepts. Participants will have opportunity to explore and apply self-organization and self-direct concepts that contribute most effectively to building a high performing team environment where quality can be built into a product through the empirical process of inspecting and adapting processes and products.

Participants learn about the 3 Scrum roles (Team Member, Product Owner, and ScrumMaster), the 4 Scrum meetings (Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospective) and process of building product in a time-boxed iteration called a Sprint.  Attendees learn about the paradigm shifts that occur when organizations move from traditional linear / defined development environments to the empirical agile environment and strategies and tactics used to support and manage the change that occurs.  Learning occurs in a highly interactive, exercise-based and discussion-based learning environment. Attendees learn by exploring and doing, not through lecture.

At the end of the CSM course, the student should understand:

  • The cultural and philosophical basis of agile and its values and principles
  • Why agile and Scrum are not the same thing, but are synergistic
  • The essence and application of the Scrum practices, principles, and values
  • How empirical or defined the approach to project work should be based upon analysis of the work and problem domain (i.e. when to use Scrum)
  • The desired skills needed for the Devleopment Team, Product Owner and ScrumMaster and identify their responsbilities
  • The rationale behind the absence of a project manager in Scrum
  • Apply estimating and planning techniques and practices nuanced to Scrum
  • The use and presentation of certain data used for inspection and adaption to improve team process performance and the product quality
  • The criticality of building trust within and between Scrum teams and others in the organization
  • How self-organization and self-direction are at the center of high perfroming teams and how leadership is applied in that environment
  • And identify the "smells" (pitfalls) that the organization and teams may encounter that may impede the use of Scrum
  • How kanban-style work flow is applied in Scrum
